Whether professional, family or in a hobby – we all have goals in life that we want to achieve. This can be the chief item in the company, but also a smaller project, such as a sports program to go through.
The question with regard to short and long-term goals is of course: How do I set my goals correctly and how can I achieve them?
1. Set concrete goals
It is important in the goal setting that you formulate as exactly as possible what you want to achieve. So instead of saying, “I want to be happy,” you’d better set a goal, like, “I want to find the right man and a job that fills me.” Only those who know their destination exactly can follow it and achieve it.
2. Do not overdo it
Prioritize your goals and do not put too many at the same time! It’s more effective to focus on a few than dancing at too many weddings simultaneously.
3. Think in stages
It is more motivating to set goals than to embark on the big picture. Anyone who reaches a small milestone time and again feels reassured and collects a lot of positive experiences in between. Try splitting your long-term goals into a few small steps.
4. Fight the inner moron
Of course, this is an important step towards achieving the goals. Because often the first hurdle is the biggest – and to leave our comfort zone. Achieving a goal is usually associated with effort. You just have to be prepared to take it on yourself.
5. Take habits
If you want to reach your goal, then you have to start rethinking – and acting differently than before. Ask yourself: what can I change now in my daily activities to get closer to my goal?
6. Focus on your strengths
When setting goals, it’s important to focus on what your strengths and preferences are. Setting the goal of becoming a basketball star with a height of 1.60 meters may be less useful. You can and should think big – because nothing is impossible in life. Nevertheless, you should always set goals that are within reach.
7. Form positive beliefs
Self-confidence is a very important point when it comes to putting his plans into action. Negative beliefs should be changed. Instead of saying to you over and over again “I can never do that”, often say quietly to you: “I can do everything I want.” Of course, this does not have an effect on your performance overnight. But if you incorporate this belief into your everyday life, it will certainly bear fruit!
8. Visualize goals
Often it helps to visualize his projects. Means: First think about what your day looks like, if you have reached your goal or your partial goals – you can of course also write down your visions. Then maybe draw a small picture or a sketch. One does not say in vain: Have your goals in mind!
9. Avoid distractions
Of course, if you are constantly dealing with things that have nothing to do with your goals, then you will find them hard to reach. Avoid distractions wherever you can – especially on days when you want to deal specifically with your goal. Remember, however, that you should consciously take breaks in between – to gather strength.
10. Be flexible
You realize that you cannot reach some of your goals? Then be prepared to modify it a bit. You do not have to completely give up on your goals – but perhaps you can only realize a few sub goals.
11. Reward yourself for your achievements
You have a small success listed? Great, then reward yourself for it – with a good meal, a gift or a wellness trip. Your motivation will grow – and you will achieve more in the end.
12. Set new goals
After the finish is before the finish! To rest on its laurels for too long after attaining its goals will eventually bring you to a standstill. Crossing a finish line often gives you an extra boost of motivation. So: take new goals – and let’s go!
What can one learn from athletes when pursuing a goal?
Athletes think long term; they formulate intermediate goals and align their training on it. Dividing a goal into partial or intermediate goals with completion dates is important in order to stay tuned, not to lose motivation.
As a self-employed person, I do that every year. I think: what do I want to gain in terms of sales and profits, what are my hourly rates, how many new customers do I want to win?
Cannot it be frustrating if you do not reach the destination?
Clearly, a goal should be realistic and positive, and then it is more likely to be achieved. But most people think too small. We should think big, set goals high. For us women in particular, this is often difficult because we are afraid of failure.
We do not believe in ourselves and dare too little. But if you do not make a bigger goal, you have already failed today. You do not even set off and do not come into action.
What kind of goal is the most successful?
Outcome goals often generate frustration. In sports, someone is a hundredth of a second faster, and you have not reached his goal. Therefore, for me action goals are more effective, where the “How do I achieve the Desired?” the focus is on the way to the goal and the actions are described in more detail. I am also convinced of motto goals. They aim at the inner attitude.
An example: An acquaintance travels a lot and is overweight because he fills himself too much in the hotel at the buffet. Since he set his motto “I’m leaving the buffet with a light stomach”, it works much better. In sports, however, I usually work with a combination of results and action goals.
