Let’s be honest and admit we’ve all kept an eye out for job openings while employed. What if I told you passively looking isn’t enough to land your dream employer?

You’ll need to do a little extra work to hone in on landing the dream job with an ideal employer.

If you’re unsure where to start, fret not. In the following article, I’m going to be sharing with you how to find companies you’ll love working for and landing your dream job there.

How to find employers you’ll enjoy working for?

Before I dive into how you can get hired by your dream company, I want to take a moment to address something just as important. The fact that some of you might not have a dream company in mind.

If you don’t have dream companies in mind, it doesn’t mean there aren’t companies out there you’d love working for. The key here is discovering which employers are the best match.

Online platforms like LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter only have the functionality to match you the type of job you’re seeking and not the employer.

So here’s what you can do to determine which companies you’d enjoy working for… 

1. Create a list of companies you’re going to target. Build out a list of companies you’re a great match with by researching their core values, vision and culture as they align with your personal career skills and interests.

2. Need more inspiration? Start with some highly ranked employers. For instance, the list of Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work.

Once you’ve been able to great a general target list, you’re ready to move onto the next phase of your dream job search: making these employers aware you’re a great match.

Steps you need to take to land a job with your dream employer

There’s a ton of benefits to following companies on your target list while you’re still employed. For one, there isn’t the pressure of seeking out employment that isn’t the right match as a result of financial pressure.

With that said, here are steps you’ll need to take in order to land a job with your dream employer…

1. Learn as much as you possibly can about your dream company

Learning as much as you possibly can about an employer is a great way to start tailoring your future interactions. Whether this is an in-person interview or interacting with them through social media, you’ll need that diversity of knowledge to ask meaningful questions.

Consider the last several job interviews you’ve had. How often were you asked the questions, “What interests you in our company?”, “What do you know about our company?”, “Why did you apply?”.

All of these questions can be answered with ease with the right research.

2. Clean up your online presence (don’t miss this step!)

If you’re going to be interacting with an employer in a professional manner, you better be looking the part. There’s certainly no shortage of job search horror stories around the inappropriate social media content realm.

Whether it’s Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, make sure that everything the employer can see is work-appropriate. If something is questionable, it’s likely you should delete (or change your privacy settings if you must keep it).

Best yet, you might choose to create a whole new social account to interact with employers. Just keep in mind that anyone can look up your public information.

3. Connect with companies on social media platforms

You already have active accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest, Quora, LinkedIn etc. Chances are, your dream employer is also active on social media. (If not, you better pick up the phone or get emailing!)

Simply follow their social accounts to get updates on key milestones, changes and how they’re making an impact in their industry. Doing so will make starting a conversation just that much easier.

And if you’re lucky, you’ll find an acquaintance or two that already works for your dream employer that might be able to refer you.

4. Sign-up for the recruiting platforms your dream company is on

Is your dream company a Fortune 100? I can say with certainty they syndicate job postings to a number of different large platforms.

Whether it’s large media outlets like Huffington Post or platforms like LinkedIn, make sure you’re signed up for all the outlets you may find job postings on.

5. Mark key hiring deadlines on your calendar

Many large companies have major recruiting seasons. Of course, you’ll know which time of year this is after all your research. While you have their careers page bookmarked, remember to mark these key hiring deadlines down on your calendar.

What I recommend is to always apply right when the job posting comes out. There’s no sense in waiting. Why?

Because most companies hire on a rolling basis. This means they don’t wait until the application deadline to start reviewing applications and interviewing applicants.

That’s why you need to be proactive in preparing your application ahead of time and applying straight away. Don’t miss an opportunity of your lifetime!

6. Meet with recruiters that scout talent for your dream company

Job fairs, networking events, industry conferences—that’s where you need to be. Meeting a company recruiter in-person can prove to be far more powerful than interacting with them through social media.

Keep an eye out for the next local even a recruiter will attend and make sure you bring a copy of your resume and portfolio with you.

7. Reach out even if there’s no job opening

At the end of the day, your dream company’s hiring timeline might not match yours. But this shouldn’t deter you from attempting to land your dream job.

If you have a question about the company, or looking for a temporary position to get in the door, never hesitate to reach out.

More often than not, there won’t be a public job posting that fits exactly what you’re looking for. But that being said, the key is to get yourself on the radar of their recruitment team.

Not only will you make a lasting impression for taking interest in the company, but HR might just remember to reach out next time there’s a good job match.
