Tell us a little bit about your company
How did you get started in this path?
I spent 21 years in management at Intel Corp. In that time, I earned 9 promotions and managed a group of ~1000 people. I felt there was knowledge that I had to share that would be useful to those on the rise professionally.
Is this something you decided early on in your career?
I’ve been a coach for about 10 years but I decided to it about 1-2 years prior.
What is the best Career Advice you’ve ever received?
You can never get comfortable in your career or you become unwilling to make changes when you need to.
Change is uncomfortable and that causes us to hang on to our jobs for too long sometimes.
If you always have a bit of anxiety or are continuously thinking about your next move, you’ll be willing to jump on opportunities when they present themselves.
What is the most exciting part of working in this industry?
Seeing someone achieve their goals following guidance I gave to them.
How do to stay abreast of the industry as an expert?
Read – a lot.
What are some of the things that you see job seekers struggle with the most?
Job seekers seem to think applying to jobs online is the way to find a job. In fact, its the worst. You get your job through personal connections.
What are the common mistakes that you see them do?
Spend too much time online and not enough time connecting personally to people.
How should job seekers approach job search today?
Get a referral to a decision maker.
Unemployment is at the lowest levels, why do you think that is?
The economy has improved.
What is the biggest trend(s) you see that job seekers will face in the next 2-3 years?
More high tech applications..
What is one advice you would give someone just out of college today?
Get experience in your chosen field BEFORE you graduate.
It will be much easier to get a good position if you do.
What is one advice you would give someone who is switching careers?
Don’t do a job search to “find something”.
Figure out what you want to do first and then let that inform your actions.
How should job seekers get the most out of LinkedIn?
Your next job will come through or with another person. We all have to really understand that people or your network are your most important tool for finding a job.
LinkedIn can help you reconnect with former friends, classmates, co-workers and bosses which is a huge asset to ensuring an adequate group of people in your network.
You can also easily stay connected to them and keep nurturing the relationship not only through LI messaging but also to share some of the great content on the site.
What is the biggest trend(s) you see that hiring managers will face in the next 2-3 years?
How to get fewer but better applicants.
Dorothy, what are you currently working on?
I do a weekly Friday email and companion FB Live video.
All of them are about insights personally & professionally to help a person with personal growth.
What are the best resources you recommend to job seekers?
Good use of LinkedIn.
