What kind of insurance do you have?
I’m not talking about car insurance, life insurance, health insurance, or probably anything that came to your mind. I’m talking about your job/career insurance. One of the very first ideas RJ Hodges talks about in this book is this idea of “job insurance.”.
Of course, there’s no such thing as actual job insurance, but what he’s referring to is your safety net or supplemental income.
What would happen if you lost your job tomorrow? Do you have enough money in the bank to make it for the next few months? Do you have a secondary income that can support you until you find new employment?
You Can’t Practice At The Game is all about preparation. It’s a guide to help you set yourself up for success while preparing for whatever speed bumps may lie ahead.
Hodges first explains that your ability to make decisions that are attuned to your goals is the first, and biggest, step. “This or that?” Before making a decision, you should be thinking about whether or not your actions will help get you closer to whatever goals you have set out. This is a concept I have heard many successful people talk about, actually.
Isn’t it interesting how so many high-achieving individuals have very similar thought processes? Hodges also makes it very clear that you need to rid yourself of certain habits, ideas, and/or individuals that might hold you back from reaching your full potential.
Sometimes this can be the toughest part of the decision-making process as you may lose some friends if their goals aren’t aligned with yours. If you find yourself in a situation like that, then you’ll just have to decide which is more important.
What are you doing to prepare yourself for the future? Hodges describes that in order to be prepared for the future, you need to be taking action today. Just like putting money into a “rainy day fund,” you put a little bit of money in every week or month in order to be ready for future financial burdens.
What books are you reading? What classes are you taking? Who are you listening to? Who are you talking to? These are all questions that you should be asking yourself frequently. Something else Hodges spends a decent amount of pages on is your level of knowledge involving your craft.
How much do you really know about what you’re doing? This is where he suggests taking the time to study and do some “dirty work” as he calls it. Dirty work is the work that involves spending hours studying your skill or craft, and it takes time.
This is the stuff nobody sees you doing behind closed doors. I can definitely relate to this section more than the rest of the book because I believe that’s where I’m at right now with my business. I spend almost every waking hour that I’m not at work growing my business and learning about my business model. It’s become almost an addiction.
If you’ve read my review on How To Live A Good Life, then you’ll remember that my number one strength is my love of learning. So I guess it’s kind of just an added bonus for me that dirty work is a necessary part of the equation.
Hodges goes on to talk about the importance of consistency, persistence, taking action, and more. Whether you’re someone interested in starting a business or someone just looking for ways to be better prepared for your future, this book has great content for you.
