GUEST INTRODUCTION – KWAME CHRISTIAN

Kwame Christian is the director of the American Negotiation Institute, he teaches us about an alternative way to resolve conflict. He’s a business lawyer, and serves as a negotiation consultant for attorneys and companies closing large business deals. On top of that, he also hosts the podcast Negotiate Anything.

EPISODE SUMMARY

1. Kwame’s initial academic love was psychology, and he achieved a bachelor of psychology before turning his focus to Law. As a result of his interest in psychology, his approach to negotiation differs from that of most lawyers and attorneys. He uses his knowledge and skills to teach others how to negotiate more effectively in order to resolve conflict in a much more impactful way.

2. Kwame tells the story of a day at the playground when no one would play with him, and how that day shaped his determination to be liked. Respect came later when he decided to become good at conflict instead of avoiding it. We negotiate every day, and mastering the skill is life changing.

3. Negotiation awareness is important to attain if you wish to strengthen your relationships and get more of what you want out of life. Kwame shares what that means, and where it can be applied to create win/win situations and help more people around you.

4. Kwame talks about reframing difficult conversations in a way that shifts them into a positive situation instead of a negative or stressful one.

5. Kwame also shares 3 steps to having a successful negotiation, and goes into detail about what they are, and how to apply them.

This interview is part of  the “Industry Expert Series“.

#109 - Industry Expert Series - Jerri Williams - Retired Special Agent FBI

Guest Introduction – Jerri Williams

Jerri Williams served 26 years as a special agent with the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation).

During her career, Jerri specialized in cases targeting major economic crime and corruption.

Post retirement, she has served as the spokesperson and director of media relations for SEPTA, which is Philadelphia’s public transportation provider. She also produces a popular podcast called FBI Retired Case File Review. Beyond all this, Jerri’s also a published author!

Episode Summary

1. Jerri Williams got her start as a juvenile probation officer before an ad she saw had her moving into a much different role in the FBI. She describes the role of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and a small glimpse at a few of the 200 violations of Federal Law that they investigate

2. Jerri gives some insight into what someone who wishes to join the FBI needs to know, including their age requirements, drug policy, experience needed and things you need to consider before considering a career with the bureau. The application process is competitive and health and experience are essential to being chosen.

3. Jerri lets us in on the day to day demands on an FBI agent, and how every case can require different elements to be in place. Manpower, resources, time, warrant  and various other things all come into play, and can vastly impact an agent’s day.

4. The level of commitment required by the FBI is far above most other careers, and as a result it’s more of a calling or mission than a job. It’s a lot less about what you do, and more about who you are.

5. Jerri tells us about her books and her podcast, as well as her views on the negative hearsay that exists about the FBI. She also gives some insight into what other agents tend to do post retirement.

Quotes

“The FBI is a law enforcement agency and since 9/11 has also become intelligence driven”

“We keep this nation safe and we make sure that Federal laws are followed”

“What the FBI is looking for is people who can do the job”

“What’s more important is the experience that you bring with you”

“Each agent almost runs their own business”

“It’s a new situation, it’s a new experience, but I have the confidence in myself that I’m going to be able to figure this out”

Guest Introduction – Darci Hether

As an esteemed interior designer located in New York City – with projects that span coast to coast and internationally – Darci Hether specializes in luxury, full service, turn-key residential interiors

Episode Summary

1. Since her childhood, Darci Hether has had a strong affinity toward interior designing. It was not uncommon for her to rearrange her parents living room or her bedroom furniture. Not knowing it was a viable career, she was prepared to take courses until she found what she enjoyed.

2. After helping a friend with a design project, Darci found her passion and pursued it without regrets.

3. Darci goes into detail about what an interior designers do, and how it differs from what we see on HGTV. Her firm takes the project from conception to completion, and that takes a lot more attention to detail and communication than most people are aware of.

4. Darcy outlines her day to day, complete with meetings, outlines, marketing, client relations and communication. She also has to stay on top of the marketplace to see what’s new and available for her next client.

5. The selection process and curating the items for presentation tends to be Darcy’s favourite part of the process. When she was a solo entrepreneur, she had to run it all, and there were parts of her job she didn’t enjoy as much, but now that she has a team she gets to focus on business development. Bringing in the finishing touches and injecting the client’s personality into the space makes her truly happy.

6. Darci shares her thoughts on how someone who is interested in becoming an interior designer could get started. She feels that both design and business courses could make a huge difference in the success of a new designer.

7. Darci also talks about the value that can be gained from working alongside another designer in order to learn in a more immersive way.

8. Darci also talks about certification, and the best ways to learn more within the interior design industry without paying a ton of money for courses.

Quotes

“I feel like a lot of times there’s a misconception that we pet pretty fabrics and we pick pretty sofas and it’s all very fabulous”.

“There’s kind of a saying in the industry where it’s 10 to 20 percent design and 80 to 90 percent business”.

“There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes, and we’re very detailed.”

“I do recommend at least taking the intro class”.

“You need to know your numbers, you don’t want to just blindly hand it off to someone”.

“There’s definitely space within the industry”.

“Find a mentor, somebody who can help you along the way”.

2. He tells us about his experiences with networking, and how he feels it differs from connecting, which is much deeper and more fulfilling.

3. Traditional networking is about Who you Know. However, connecting is “Who you know, who knows who you need to know”.

4. Larry shares a concept about connection – ABCD – Always Be Connecting the Dots. He describes how he found it, and how it works.

5. Always a fan of sharing deeper knowledge, He goes on to describe the Rule of 7

6. Larry also introduces to us the Connector’s Blueprintand how you can benefit from it. The elements of the Connector’s Blueprint are:

  • Column 1 – List of 5-10 names of people you would like to meet
  • Column 2 – List the people whom you feel most comfortable narrating (you can easily talk about what they do, and why they do it well?)
  • Column 3 – For each name you put down in Column 2 – put down the name of person who can immediately benefit from the name(s) in Column 2
  • Column 4 – Why did you put that particular name in Column 3?

7. Finally, Larry leaves us with powerful examples of community, what they can accomplish, and why they truly thrive.

Quotes

“You don’t have to be an extrovert to be a great networker”

“I see networking as to a transaction and connecting is to relationships”

“It’s not about who you know, it’s about who you know who knows who you need to know”

“You’re connecting people for their why and their purpose, and no just because you know them”

He also really likes sales. Being able to develop a team, and solve problems for customers and clients makes his career pretty satisfying

“I’ve always had a curiosity about technology.”

“I’ve always gravitated, I think naturally, toward talent and career development”

“You’re going to invest in these relationships with candidates”

#85 - A Day in the Life of a Talent Manager & Strategist - Ashwin Jacob

Guest Introduction – Ashwin Jacob

Ashwin Jacob is the Head of Talent & Brand at Iconic Media Group, based in Los Angeles, California.

Ashwin Jacob is a first generation American who learned English through entertainment mediums like television and music. He saw a lot of people he related to within the entertainment industry that ultimately caused him to want to be involved.

He was told it was a pipe dream, but he went for it anyway and has had a very robust and interesting career in various roles within the entertainment industry that has him rubbing shoulders with some of the most talented people on the planet.

Episode Summary

1.  Ashwin kicks things off by clarifying the difference between a talent manager and an agent. He explains that an agent is more in the realm of lining up work and deals in the short term for clients, whereas a talent manager has to keep the long term vision in mind and figure out the balance between what is good for the client now, and how it will benefit them or hurt their career in the future.

2. He has to be able to communicate with all kinds of people in order to make things run as smoothly as possible.

3.  He talks about the visibility within the entertainment industry, and how his job directly impacts not only himself and his client, but everyone who is touched by the work that they do.

4. He also pulls a few of his favorite things out of the job , including the negotiations involved with every step of the journey, and building the relationships required to get things accomplished.

5. He lists the demand as one of the challenges of the entertainment industry and his job specifically. He shares that unlike a regular 9 to 5, he doesn’t get to shut his work off at the end of a long day, it’s more of a lifestyle and he has to be fully committed to what goes into making it succeed.

6. He also describes the sensitivity required when dealing with artists and creatives, because their entire life and energy goes into their art, and it takes an equally artistic approach to create a rewarding and fulfilling career.

7. To get started on the path to talent management, Ashwin recommends you start meeting people. Apply to be an intern at a talent agency, there is so much you can learn and so many people you can meet while working as an intern or assistant. It can truly open doors to people you couldn’t meet on your own.

8. He also shares what kinds of backgrounds people typically come from, and how you can progress regardless of your scholastic achievements.

Quotes

“I get to work with people that range from Athletes to digital influencers”

“Every client is unique in their own way, and every day has its hurdles”

“Entertainment isn’t necessarily the highest paid industry in the world, but it’s definitely the most visible”

“The challenge in entertainment is you really have to be on. All the time.”

“An assistant really becomes an extension of the executive they work for”

#84 - A Day in the Life of a Product Marketing Manager - Joydeep GangopadhyayGuest Introduction – Joydeep Gangopadhyay

Joydeep Gangopadhyay is a Product Marketing Manager at Facebook.

Joydeep has worked for Facebook for 4 years so far with a single mission in mind: Make meaningful connections between businesses and people.

Episode Summary

1. Joydeep goes in depth about what a Product Marketing Manager is, and the roles they play in the success of not only a company, but in building relationships with the people who need the product.

2. He explains that his job is a lot about understanding the market, and how to best achieve a client’s goals within that market.

3. He also shares his journey going from studying computer science and software engineering in college to what he does today, and the various stages along the way.

4. He gives some insight on something called the Regret Minimization Framework: the idea is to fast forward 100 years and ask yourself “will I regret not doing this?” in order to minimize the amount of regret you’ll have at the end of your life.

5.  Joydeep goes into his day to day , and the job he does surrounding the Facebook Pixel. He explains what the Facebook Pixel is, and how it benefits business owners who use online advertising to make sales.

6. Joydeep’s day begins by gathering insights on where people spend time, and the trends they tend to follow. He then spends time looking at data surrounding growth, and determining why something is growing, in order to build products surrounding that marketing opportunity.

7. He breaks the job down into 2 parts: Inbound Marketing which helps them answers the questions: What do we build, who do we build for, what do they need and why?

8. The second part is Outbound Marketing: the product is built at this point, so how do we package it? How do we talk about it? How do we get it out to market? Joydeep also talks about various challenges he faces day to day, and what he’s learned from them.

9. He also describes the best ways for a person to develop the necessary skills to become a product marketing manager, as well as how to apply for a job like this, since it’s often very difficult to obtain from a job posting site.

10. He leaves us with some excellent advice surrounding life, careers, and taking risks

#82 - Personal Branding Expert Series with Christopher Wirth

Episode Summary

1. Nissar asks Chris to share his story, where brand came from, and how it applies to what he does today. Chris explained that the brand came about as a result of the perfect quote at a time when he needed it, and that it eventually grew into a brand, and then a movement.

2. Nissar points out that typically a brand begins alongside a business, but in this particular instance, the brand came first, and the business after.

3. The guys talk about hosting their podcasts, and the aim of each. Christopher talks about how a piece of feedback opened his eyes to the largest possible impact of his show, and Nissar brings up the trap of staring at vanity metrics like downloads numbers, and how feedback and engagement has been so much more meaningful.

4. Receiving photos, texts, emails and letters is far more rewarding than numbers on a stats dashboard.

5. Chris also brings up how much work a podcast can be, and how he underestimated it at first.

6. He gets into detail about co-branding, and how much easier the podcast has made the entire process.

7. He describes what co-branding is, how it benefits both parties, and how it creates a positive impact to a much greater number of people than to go it alone.

8. Chris talks about a particular listener of his show, and the fact that this guy tunes in to every single episode, and set a goal to appear on the show this year.

9. He describes the feeling he got when he learned this information, and the positive ripple effect it created.

10. Finally, he leaves off with a few tips and ideas that listeners can use and implement to help them get results.

Quotes

“There’s a difference of talking about it versus doing it.”

“Less negativity, more positivity”

“My show had an impact on his life, and he wanted to get on the show”

“Be very specific with your actions”

Brian Howard is a recurring guest on The CareerMetis Podcast and is very knowledgeable about the career management space.

He has written a book called Motivated Resumes and LinkedIn Profiles, and Nissar feels that it’s a great resource for anyone entertaining into a job seeking situation.

#81 - Career Expert Series - Resumes & LinkedIn Profiles with Brian Howard

Episode Summary

1. Brian kicks off the discussion by describing what differentiates his book from other books in the career management space. He explains a feature in the book called What The Pros Say, where selectively chosen resume professionals share approximately 188 quotes, allowing the reader to get into the minds of leading resume experts with ease.

2.  He also tells Nissar that the book contains 80 sample resumes, about 40 sample cover letters, and even more job search written communications.

3. He also describes how the contributing resume writers each have a section with their contact information, should anyone want to have their resumes professionally written by one of them, as well as a password contained within the book, that can be used on the website to see digital copies of the resumes contained within.

4. Brian gives insight on the function of a resume: what it’s purpose is, and what it isn’t. He shares a common mistake that a lot job seekers make with their resume because it’s an easy crime to commit.

5. He talks about a resume as a marketing piece, which is easy on the eyes, with adequate white space, instead of being crowded with a blizzard of text.

6. He shares tips to make a resume more effective in getting a desired reaction from an employer. He explains that accurate contact information, branding words, and highlighted skills and abilities are crucial to making the desired impact.

7. He also puts weight on having a concise summary that sheds a light on your achievements. He also talks about how important it is to be honest on a resume, rather than stretch the truth or embellishment, and what the ramifications of a lie could be.

8. Nissar asks Brian to share his thoughts on employment gaps, and how someone in charge of hiring may view gaps in employment as a bad thing. Brian explains that things have changes in terms of how gaps on a resume are viewed, and although they are generally more accepted today, a gap can still cause issues if it was particularly lengthy, or the candidate was not productive during that time period.

9. He also recommends being forthcoming and honest about gaps, and the reasons why they occurred, and explains that often times the employer will understand, and at times overlook the gap.

10. Brian talks about the various components of a Linked In profile, as well as how to get the most out of them. He describes keywords, and the placement that is the most effective when using them on your profile.

11. He gives insights on how the algorithms work, and stresses completeness as one of the criteria that Linked In puts weight on in the rankings.

12.  He also breaks down how connections work, and why they are valuable on Linked In, as well as how to use them to your advantage to make your profile as effective as possible.

Quotes

“No other resume book has ever provided such insight from so many qualified sources in one place”

“I write at length about strategy and optimization”

“A lot of job seekers put too much historical information into a resume”

“A resume is more of an appetizer than the main course”

“Just be honest and truthful”

“Employment gaps on a resume can create anxiety”

“Profile completeness is the trump card”

“The job market is in pretty good shape”

#80 - Career Expert Series - Eric B. Horn

Guest Introduction – Eric B. Horn

Eric B Horn is the cohost of a video blog C.A.R.E Vlog and the co-founder and co-moderator of the Facebook group The C.A.R.E. Club. He has written 4 books and has been at thing for a long time. He’s helped multiple job seekers to land their dream jobs and start compelling and fulfilling careers.

He’s an IT geek, and at his first job after college, after 4 years and 4 promotions, there was a downsizing in the company and he was let go. He wasn’t prepared for it, and was caught without a resume or savings to fall back on. It was the wake up call that he needed to better prepare himself for the career management world.

After this run in, and the journey that followed, he decided to share his experience, and expertise to help others find the career they would truly thrive in.

Episode Summary

1. Eric and Nissar discuss trends, and how the evolution of technology is always a game changer in the world of career management. He explains that as technology advance, people are forced out of jobs that no longer require as much of the human element, and they simply aren’t prepared for it.

2. He also shares that people lack initiative when it comes to training and educating themselves, and rely too heavily on corporate America to give them what they need.

3. He talks about people making the excuse “I can’t afford to go back to school” and gives action steps a person can take even if that is a true statement in order to make a shift toward a better future.

4. He also describes a very real misconception people have about applying for jobs in the modern day, and that it’s just no longer the case. Things have changed drastically from previous years, and it takes a much more involved approach to get where you want to go in today’s job market.

5. He takes a moment to break down the number one asset you have in your arsenal when it comes to the job search: your relationships. Eric shares that for every position posted online, there are hundreds of applicants, and as a result of that, people are more likely to hire someone they know, like and trust over a complete stranger.

6. He says that people in your network that you forge real connections with, are more likely to open doors for you that you’d be unable to open for yourself.

7.  Nissar asks Eric to share some ideas, insights or tips on how to build a better network, and Eric is more than happy to oblige! Eric explains that helping a fellow professional and providing them with help is a great way to create a strong relationship right away.

8. He also describes the fear that you have to get over in order to put yourself out there, do the thing you may not want to do, and build strong bonds with the people around you.

9. He talks about massive job websites and how they are here to stay, but that they benefit a company more than a job seeker, because a company needs to fill a position quickly and understands that a large volume of applicants will be available to them.

10. For the job seeker, it’s important to find a way to stand out beyond the job banks, and establish a way to share their expertise in order to attract the right connections and people who need their knowledge and skills.

Today we will be hearing and learning from Nathan Hirsch, Founder of Freeeup.

#79 – Freelance Career Expert Series : Nathan Hirsch from Freeeup.com

Guest Introduction – Nathan Hirsch

Nathan Hirsch is the cofounder of a startup company called FreeeUp.

Freeeup gives business owners fast access to a hand picked network of professional freelancers in e-commerce, digital marketing web development and much more, who have already been vetted for skill, attitude and communication.

Nathan started off as a broke college student, and he always wanted to be a business owner.  He watched all of the struggle and success his mother went through in starting her business, and knew he could do it.

He started off selling textbooks in college, and eventually found his way to Amazon and was hooked. He began experimenting with selling different products, and failed multiple times. He decided to step out of his comfort zone and start selling baby products, and before he knew it: things took off.

He started hiring people, and experienced both good and bad workers during the hiring process.

He learned that a lot of businesses experience the same problem, and decided to create FreeeUp as an answer to that problem.

Episode Summary

1. Nathan shares some of the positive things that come as a result of being a freelancer as opposed to having a full time job.

2. He talks about the benefits of having multiple clients in terms of income security.

3. He also talks about the freedom freelancers experience as well as the ability to refine skills as well as learning new ones, instead of doing repetitive tasks and becoming complacent in the workplace.

4. He also explains that flexibility is another perk of being a freelancer, because you can play with the number of hours you work and clients you pick up in order to best suit you as a worker.

5. He talks about the fact that even though his workers are remote, he can still build a company culture with them, and provides an example to back up the statement. He also describes the process that can lead to repeat business if you build a strong relationship with your freelance worker, or your client.

6. Nathan gives us the inside scoop on which jobs and careers are growing within the FreeeUp community. He mentions skill sets like audio and video editing for podcasts and webinars, as well as marketing and being able to create content and run advertising campaigns.

7. He also talks about where a lot of freelancers go wrong in that they continue to see themselves as an employee, rather than a business.

8. Nathan shares the process involved with getting involved with FreeeUp, for both the freelancer, and the client side. He talks about the perks for both, and why they are having a lot of success, and how hands on his team is in making sure that everyone is having a great experience with the company.

Quotes

“When I came across Amazon one day I became addicted. I became obsessed with it”

“I failed over and over”

“I was running a multi-million dollar baby product business out of my college dorm room as a 20 year old single college guy”

“It just takes forever to get through to find those really good workers in this sea of other freelancers.”
